How To Pick A Guinea Pig Habitat
Finding a guinea pig enclosure or habitat is an easy process search-wise since there are so many types available but there are some things to learn before you go on and choose the one you like. Some of the things we’ll talk about are how to find one when you can’t find one, 2nd level problems, minimal space requirements for guinea pigs, and more.
Minimal Habitat Size – Although you won’t get a specific number on how long and wide your guinea pig enclosure should be, what you will get is how much of a square footage one or two guinea pigs should get at least. For one guinea pig, it should be at least 7.5 square feet and for two, at least 10.5 square feet.
Guinea Pig Behavior – Guinea pigs are very active animals both at night and during the day so they do need a durable habitat to keep them enclosed when you can’t monitor them. They do chew but excessive chewing happens only when they’re bored. This is yet another reason to get a big enough enclosure.
Cage Time For Guinea Pigs – When you can’t monitor your guinea pig, the option is to leave them inside an enclosure but no matter how big the enclosure is, they should still get out of cage time so that they’re mentally and physically stimulated and so that they don’t get bored
Outdoor And Indoor Options – Outdoors guinea pig habitats should be well protected from weather elements. Some can be used indoors as well if they’re not too big and if they’re easily transportable, usually with wheels on the bottom. The preferred build for outdoor models is some type of wood, usually fir wood or pine wood, chicken wire sides, and a waterproof asphalt roof.
2nd Level Trouble – Most guinea pigs are afraid of heights but that doesn’t mean that they can’t enjoy the comfort of a 2nd level habitat. Make sure that the ramp is wide enough so that they don’t feel like they’re going to fall easily and that should be enough for them to use it.
To Sum Up
All in all, what guinea pig enclosure you’ll get solely depends on what you came looking for here. We can’t recommend one since there’s too much of a difference between each model but what we can recommend is for you to always check how big the habitat is. One guinea pig should be housed inside a 7.5 and two in a 10.5 square feet habitat at least. Since we’re on the subject, we advise you to read either the guinea pig cages for two articles or the big guinea pig cages article next. For reviews of all of the types mentioned and not yet mentioned, read the best guinea pig cages article next.
