Do Birds Care About Cage Color?

Interior colors have a weird effect on humans. Red makes us angry and anxious, a specific shade of pink makes us sluggish, while white makes us calm. Luckily, birds don’t care much about cage color unless it’s purple that, for some unexplained reason, most larger birds just don’t like.

Color Varieties

Although white is a pretty straightforward color, there are hue and shade varieties in it as well. In bird cages, the most frequently seen shades are chalk white, eggshell white, powder white, and traditional white. There are plenty of others like frost, cotton, and even salt white.

What Makes A Finish Durable And Safe?

A finish is meant to keep protected the construction material that would rust otherwise. A bird-safe white finish will mean that it doesn’t feature toxic chemicals like lead, zinc, or chromate. It’ll bond well with the metal and it’ll be durable if it doesn’t chip easily. Of course, it’s not limited to white finishes only.

A Decorative Solution

White is often used in decorative pieces. That’s why you’ll find white decorative cages fairly often as well. They can be used for weddings or as letters, flowers,  and candle holders. These are typically going to be round and are not meant for housing birds. Especially since they’re round.

Why You Might Want A White Colored Cage?

If you’re still considering whether or not you should purchase one such cage, there are plenty of benefits to owning these cages that’ll ensure your bird is kept happy and safe.

Easy Blending

Just like black, a white color fits any interior design. It also won’t look as chunky and out of place. Moreover, this color gives elegance to a room.

Hard To Miss Issues

Whenever there is a problem with these cages which includes chipped paint and rusted areas, you’ll notice those issues fast and then you can easily work on fixing them.

Cage Stats And Features To Check Before Purchase

Choosing a birdcage, unfortunately, isn’t as simple as picking the color and shape you like. There are a lot of things to check out to ensure that your bird is housed in a cage that’s as safe as it can be.

Finish Types

Although most cage manufacturers will ensure that the finish is bird-safe, it’s still important to know that some paints are bird-toxic. You also want to make sure that the finish won’t easily chip away. For that reason, a powder coat finish would the best. Of course, these finishes also differ in quality.

Construction Materials

Although stainless steel and aluminum are easy to clean materials, it’s counterproductive to color them any color. Aluminum can be anodized but you won’t ever get a pure white color out of that process, only off-white, and grey. That’s why most white cages are going to be made out of wrought iron, iron, or alloy steel.

Preferred Size

Birds can be small, medium, and large. Even within those size categories, there are different cage sizes that each bird prefers and should be housed in. An equation to base your size assessment on would be bird wingspan X 1 1/2 for cage width and cage height bird length X 1 1/2.

Weight And Mobility

Stands are excellent ways to increase the mobility of a cage that’s more on the heavier side. Lighter cages are often going to have removable stands while heavier ones are going to have fixed stands. The thing that makes them mobile is the wheels on the bottom so if you plan on moving your cage a lot, we suggest you opt for a stand with wheels.

Everything You Need To Know About Bars

There are two things to know here: wire spacing and bar gauge. Bar spacing will apply to every bird and should never be too big (head, wings, and legs stuck between bars). Bar gauge is going to be important with larger birds that have stronger beaks. It applies to macaws, cockatoos, and African greys. Aim for a bar gauge somewhere between 9 and 12.

Recommended Wire Spacing

Making Cage Cleaning Easy

Some cages are easier to clean than others. Apart from easily cleanable materials, other features can also make it harder or simpler. We suggest aiming for a larger front door so you can easily access the inside and extras that you’ll take out for cleaning. A cleaning tray with a wire grid above it is also recommended.

Best 7 White Bird Cages

The only differences between the cages that’ll follow are shape, size, and wire spacing. Remember, not all cages are meant to house your bird so be sure to pay special attention to that. We managed to also collect a few cages with different shades of white.

Repainting Your Cage White

In case you already own a birdcage that you don’t want to trade for a white one, what you can do is repaint it by following a few simple steps. Patience is most important in this process.

Repainting Process

The things you’ll need to repaint your cage are sandpaper, a wire brush, a cleaning cloth, a drop cloth, paintbrush, and paint.

1. The first step is to clean the cage. Grab your drop cloth, place it on the ground and start to scrub the cage with your wire brush. The goal is to get rid of any loose paint and flakes. Next, you’ll sand it smooth and wipe it with a damp cloth to remove any dust particles. This is an important step otherwise paint won’t stick properly.

2. It’s time to paint the cage. The paint should stick well to metal surfaces. You should apply it in thin coats to prevent the paint from dripping. Apply at least 2 coats and let dry.

3.  The next step is patience. You want the paint to properly dry and cure for at least 5-7 days. For the curing period, you should refer to your paint manufacturer’s details for curing. We suggest using the help of sunny weather to allow the paint to shrink and cure faster.

To Sum Up

If it were up to us, we’d go for the Prevue Pet Products Dome Bird Cage. It’s made with wrought iron, has a quality powder coat finish, features seed guards, and looks nicer due to the dome top. If this one is not the right fit for your bird, any cage on the list is a great choice but if you want to research a bit more, make sure that the cage is not too small for your specific bird and that the paint finish isn’t some cheap easily chipping paint.
