Green Cages: A Colorful Pallete

From lime, sage, and mint green, all the way to dark and light green, when it comes to green cages. Even vintage and antique cages are on the list and there’s really no limit as to what you can get. Or is it? With so many options available, it’s hard to know what cage is best suited for your bird.

Green Finish Importance

Finishes play a role in keeping cages rust and corrosion-free. This is important because birds can suffer metal poisoning if they ingest rust in any way. The best-suited finishes are typically going to be powder coats since they don’t really chip away unless they aren’t applied properly by the manufacturer. They will have to go through maintenance every few months or depending on the location of use and how much the bird wears down the cage bars. The problem might be that you’re unable to find the right shade of green for maintenance.

Know Your Bird And Their Cage Needs

The first step to getting the greatest cage possible is to get familiar with your bird and its cage needs. When you learn about this, you’re making sure that your bird is housed safely inside and that it will live a long and happy life. Each bird has different cage needs.

Heavy Duty VS Light Cages

The thing you might have noticed from the very start is that some cages look robust while others look light and flimsy. lighter flimsy cages are typically going to have some plastic areas colored green like their base while heavy-duty cages are going to be fully metal and fully green more commonly. They will also have thicker wire gauges.

green light vs heavy duty

Wire Gauge

It determines wire thickness. It’s only important to focus on it if you have a large bird like a mini or large macaw, an African grey or perhaps a small or large Cockatoo. Any wire gauge equal to or below 12 is going to be fine in those cases.

Large VS Small Cages

There’s really no limit as to how big a green bird cage can be so it’s important to knows which cage size is the most suitable for your specific bird breed. With this list, note that you can opt for a slightly smaller cage in case you plan on keeping your bird out of it frequently.

  • Finches, Canaries, Budgies – 18” x 30” x 18”, 18” x 24” x 18”, 18” x 18” x 24”
  • Lovebirds, Conures, And Parrotlets, Cockatiels – 24” x 24” x 24”, 20” x 20” x 24”
  • Ringnecks, Caiques, And Parakeets – 24” x 24” x 36”
  • Small Cockatoos, Mini Macaws, Amazon Parrots, And African Greys – 36” x 24” x 48”
  • Large Macaws, Large Cockatoos – 48” x 36” x 60”, 40” x 30” x 48”

Spacings Between Bars

Green cages are going to have wire bits no matter what. It’s the recommended cage form for sure but the wrong bar spacing can put your bird in danger.  Small birds will prefer a wire spacing of 0.25” up to 0.5”, medium birds will enjoy a cage anywhere from 0.65” up to 0.75” while large birds can live in cages with wire spacings of 0.75” up to 1.5”. We recommend you check out the wire spacing for your specific bird species.

Primary Build Material

The most common materials used for green cages are wrought iron and iron. They are as rust-resistant as the finish allows them to be. Rust-resistant and proof materials good for birds include aluminum and stainless steel although you’ll find them colored green rarely. For aluminum, the bars should be anodized to feature a green color.

Protective Extras For The Cage

Your bird will live its life playing with cage extras and toys. You’ll rotate them frequently and clean them regularly to keep your bird from getting bored and ill. Providing the cage with enough perches ensures that your bird will spend less time chewing on cage bars which will protect the green paint more.

Can I Repaint My Existing Bird Cage Green And How?

If you’re already a proud owner of a bird cage and would like to repaint the cage into a green color. With a little extra time on your hand and a few tools, you can do it successfully and be proud of what you’ve accomplished.

Tools: Sandpaper, wire brush, cleaning and drop cloths, paintbrush, green bird-safe paint

Step 1: You’ll use the drop cloth to protect your floors, next, you’ll use the wire brush to get rid of any old paint, sandpaper will be used to polish the surface, and then, wipe it with a damp cloth to remove any dust particles. Take your time with this step because the paint won’t be applied correctly and can easily chip.

Step 2: The paint you chose should be bird-safe, resilient, durable, and made so that it bonds with metal surfaces. Apply the paint in thin coats, at least two. You can use a paintbrush, artist’s brush, or spray brush. Whatever is the most suitable for you.

Step 3: The paint should now be left to dry and cure for 5 to 7 days, depending on the paint you’ve chosen. You can place it outside to dry in the sun.

What Do I Have To Avoid With Green Bird Cages?

Every bird cage has its pros and cons but some cages have cons that heavily outweigh the pros. They’re by far the most commonly mistaken things that put your bird at risk of developing certain mental and physical diseases like depression, metal poisoning, etc…

Cages Too Small

Your bird should have enough room to turn around, flap its wings, and more without touching the wire bars. Birds in cages too small usually develop depression and have a screaming and biting tendency.

Flimsy Plastic Cages

If the cage is meant to house a small bird it’s fine, but for others, it’s a terrible mistake, especially for birds that are known for chewing on things like ringnecks are. They’ll chip away plastic bits, swallow them, and in turn, you’ll end up with an ill bird.

Round Cages

There are plenty of wonderful-looking green birdcage options that aren’t fully round. We advise avoiding round cages at all costs because they’re always going to be too small for the bird and the lack of corners might cause a psychotic episode and/or anxiety and depression.

To Sum Up

We can’t speak for preference in color but we can speak of safety when it’s time to recommend one of these. We’ve decided to go with the Yaheetech Green Bird Cage due to its wrought iron construction, thick wire, and many extras like feeding and nesting doors and even a play top.
