How To Pick A Bunny Cage
The whole purpose of this article was to help you get familiar with all of the varieties of rabbit cages and hutches so you can better decide which one you need and want. For this whole concept to work, some explaining is due. With this buying guide, we aim to help you learn the most important things you should focus on when buying and product.
Rabbit Cages – There are two types of general categories of rabbit enclosures that need to come to light for us to further explain everything else. The first one is rabbit cages which are usually made with metal, metal wire, and plastic. They’re made for indoor use unless it’s stated otherwise.
Rabbit Hutches – Rabbit hutches are the second general product category. They’re defined as being made out of wood mostly and tend to have some wire bits as well. They’re commonly used outdoors but with a few tweaks, they can easily become indoor rabbit hutches as well.
Size Definition – We want to keep the size as simple as possible so we won’t go about this defining the perfect cage size for each rabbit breed. We divided rabbits into two size categories, ones that weigh over 8 lbs and ones that weigh under 8 lbs. Large rabbits will usually comfortably fit inside cages that are at least 30-in long and 36-in wide while small rabbits will fit inside cages and hutches that are at least 24-in long and 30-in wide. Of course, if you have a larger than large rabbit breed you should make sure that the dimensions match the recommended size and you can never go too big with these either way.
Indoor Rabbit Housing – Indoor rabbit housing firstly comes with the benefit of easy bonding with your rabbit. The next benefit is that indoor housed rabbits have a higher life expectancy. It’s said that indoor housed rabbits can have a 10-year life span and outdoor housed rabbits have a 2-year life span.
Outdoor Rabbit Housing – The one thing to know about outdoor rabbit housing is that you need to make sure that the rabbit is able to regulate its temperature. That’s why the hutch or cage should be insulated. At least the walls shouldn’t look like they let out the air. Wood and plastic on their own are great insulators and one other thing you can do is put bedding inside for them to burrow into it.
Keeping Rabbits Healthy – The number one problem people run into when becoming bunny owners is that their rabbits often suffer feet infections. The cause for this is that the rabbits keep walking in their own soil which causes feet infections and other health problems. There are two ways around this problem. You can either get a cage or hutch with a wire floor or make sure that cleaning your hutch or cage is easy and that you do it every 1-3 days, preferably every day.
Hutch And Cage Essentials And Why – Although a food bowl, hay feeder, and a water bottle are rabbit hutch and cage essentials, we feel that these things are pretty self-explanatory. other essentials include bedding to let rabbits burrow and so that they don’t walk in their own soil and chew toys. There’s an emphasis on chew toys especially if you’re housing your rabbit inside a wooden hutch because rabbits can and will chew through a wooden cage so the way around it is to get them a toy to chew on.
To Sum Up
We already explained how we made this bunny cages article and why so we can’t possibly recommend a model to you. This article should be your starting point so that you can easily learn about all cage and hutch types and go from there to find the one that’ll suit you perfectly. In case you missed a few articles we mentioned or didn’t mention here, make sure you read the articles about outdoor rabbit hutches, indoor rabbit hutches, or about the best bunny playpens.
